Calabrian liquorice

Calabrian Liquorice comes from Calabria’s coast area; the transformation area is situated in Rossano and Corigliano. Liquorice plants grow spontaneously along the coast, where the type of soil and the climate help to determine the glycyrrhizine content.

 According to the encyclopedia Britannica it seems that Calabria’s liquorice is the best in the world. Its flavour is bitterish sweet, it is used to make: liqueur, grappa, chocolate, torroncini (types of nougat), soft sweets, syrups and lastly, eau-de-Cologne and liquorice shampoo-shower gel.

Gastronomic use: For the production of liquorice sweets, pastilles, sticks, syrups, infusions; it is also used to flavour some types of beer and tobacco. Therapeutic properties: thanks to its effects on the hormonal balance, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and antiviral (it lowers the density and it increases the fluidity of mucus existing in the lungs and bronchi).
